Confessions From A Successful Freelance Writer

Before we get started, let me review the points highlighted in my last article so that we’re all on the same page:

See your freelancer as a business.
Read books related to your freelance work and learn lessons.
Start part-time before deciding if it’s worth it and making a decision based on the data and results.
Accept projects that can help you build a customer base.
Find a freelancer who is successful in your field to be your mentor.
Identify your target audience and use the following methods to market your freelance services: websites; blog; online portfolios; ebooks; gifts; partnerships; business cards; internet and social media such as LinkedIn, Fiverr and Elance.
Constantly strive to find new customers through marketing efforts. You can also get recommendations and recommendations from contacts (such as customers, family, friends, etc.).
In addition to the projects mentioned above, I would also like to point out that there are certain risks involved in pursuing a freelance writing career, similar to the situation that any entrepreneur faces. Risks such as unstable salaries, non-payment by customers and even fraud related to check and credit card payments.

Please note that I am not trying to prevent you from freelancing. My goal is to help you understand some of the pitfalls of this career choice to help you prepare for the path ahead. That way you won’t be faced with surprises if things don’t go according to plan, hence the importance of contingency planning.

So, how do you minimize some of the above risks? Here are my top 3 suggestions:

For each job, prepare a contract that includes payment terms, project completion timeline, costs, and any other commitments or promises.
Please ensure that the customer agrees to these terms and conditions and signs the contract before starting work.
Confirm that your bank and credit card company will compensate you for any fraud issues. Most financial institutions do this because they have FDIC insurance.
Speaking of risks, I also want to emphasize that when choosing projects, people should also take risks outside their typical field. The reason is that when freelancers take on new challenging projects, they usually open new doors. Therefore, before turning down an assignment, you should write down the pros and cons of the project. Our goal is to carry out projects that can help you grow and develop as a freelancer.

A good example is that I took on a technical writing project 15 years ago. Rather than turn down this job due to a lack of technical experience, I decided to take on the challenge and learn as much as I could. Since then, I’ve written technical writing for some of the world’s largest Fortune 500 companies (such as Applied Materials, IBM, GE, etc.). With this in mind, it’s vital to explore new freelance opportunities whenever possible because you never know where it will take you. Once you have completed the projects you are working on, you must put your heart and soul into these projects. This means taking responsibility and investing the necessary time to complete high-quality work to ensure 100% customer satisfaction.

For me, one of the biggest determinants of success as a freelancer depends on your selling ability. Not only do you have to sell yourself to get new customers, but you also have to sell the story you write. Whether it’s books, articles, or other advertisements, authors must use certain sentence structures (including keywords) to attract audiences to take action and strive to sell specific products or services to customers. That’s why it’s critical to learn how to effectively sell to businesses (B2B) and consumers (B2C). Failure to do so may hinder your freelancing. So you got it – I confess that I am a successful freelance writer. If you always stick to the above suggestions and do your best to grow and develop every day by taking on new challenges, I have no doubt that you will become a successful freelancer.
